The Truth About Oral Cancer
Oral cancer is a catch-all term that refers to a variety of cancers that can form in the mouth, including cancers of the lips, tongue, cheeks, throat and even sinuses. According to Cancer.ca, approximately 4,700 Canadians are diagnosed with an oral cavity cancer each year.
A scary thought for sure, especially considering this type of cancer is routinely being discovered late in its development. For obvious reasons, dentists and hygienists are often the first to notice the signs, which is yet another reason why it's important to keep your oral hygiene visits at our office regular.
Cancer Screening At Chapel Hill Dental
Chapel Hill Dental is committed to looking after all matters relating to you oral health. That includes performing periodic oral cancer screenings of the mouth, throat and neck. You may have noticed your dentist or hygienist manually examining your face and throat at the start of a recent appointment, part of that is checking for any new bumps or lumps.
We've also recently added a new piece of technology to help us identify oral cancer in its earliest stages: we now have our very own VELscope, the world's most widely used oral cancer-screening device. The VELscope works by emitting a harmless blue light that causes healthy tissues to naturally fluoresce. Tissues with abnormal changes in them are more easily apparent as their fluorescence will be disrupted.
Because we're committed to looking after you and your oral health, there is no extra charge for cancer screenings performed at our office.
